EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Timothy Harhen reports that the East Bridgewater Fire Department extinguished a garage fire on Plymouth Street Thursday night.
On Thursday, Aug. 15, at approximately 10:30 p.m., East Bridgewater Fire received a report of a garage fire that was attached to a raised ranch-style home, located at 957 Plymouth St.
Residents had evacuated the home prior to firefighters’ arrival.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke showing from the attached garage. Firefighters worked quickly and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of arriving. Crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and prevented spread to the home.
Firefighters conducted overhaul and checked for extensions.
The home sustained approximately $20,000 in property damage, with an estimated $15,000 in contents damage.
Chief Harhen expressed his gratitude to the homeowner, who had discovered the fire and purposefully closed all the doors to the garage, which limited the amount of oxygen that could get to the fire. As a result, the two residents are able to remain in the home.
On-scene mutual aid was provided by the Bridgewater and Whitman Fire Departments. West Bridgewater Fire provided station coverage.
The preliminary investigation suggests the fire was accidental, with oily rags and rechargeable batteries considered as potential factors. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the East Bridgewater Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
